Description

An heirloom medium to large fig with glossy black skinned fruit and deep red flesh that is treasured for its flavor and reliability. Italian Black ripens in mid-season but is also known to produce an early crop on old wood as well as a late crop on new wood in mild winter climates. This heirloom fig originates from the Becnel family nurseries in southeastern Louisiana.

eboone @ OurFigs: This is the Italian Black from Durio's Nursery, which is supposed to carry the Becnel's variety. Deeply cut 5 lobed leaves, most with 2 'thumb' lobes as well pointing straight back toward the stem. Very sweet, rich fig; Very dark purple, with pink to red interior, this is one to let start to shrivel a bit before picking if possible as it will be much better quality. Prone to splitting in rains. First fig in 2015 was on 9/14. in 2016 was on 9/10. Not vigorous

CajunB @ OurFigs: The Italian Black is an old Louisiana heirloom, bought to this country by the Becnel family over 100 years ago........jet black with red pulp, when fully ripened its a very sweet tasting fig,I have several trees planted in my orchard, its that good!
