Description

A new seedling variety introduced by Bluemalibu Farms.

Bluemalibu @ OurFigs: ...first tree rescued would have to be the Thermalito. For several reasons... first and foremost, this is the only copy of the tree that is known so far. There most certainly may be others growing elsewhere where the wasp is present, and the cross of like parents have resulted in a similar offspring, but for the present, this is the only discovered cultivar. And, because of that, I'd very much like to swap cuttings or airlayers of it with other growers that have strains of figs that are likewise precious to them, in order to safeguard these great figs that we treasure. Secondly, it is an incredibly precocious producer of figs that makes one weak-in-the-knees, they are so good. I'm thrilled that my assessment of this fig is shared by others, as was made apparent at the Long Island Fig Festival at Matty's a week ago. There, the Thermalito (pictured in the foreground of this next pic), was gauged by many to be the best offered at the gathering, and by others to be second only to the caprified Black Madeira.

The Thermalito is simply the result of a visit from these little winged wizards of ours, and yes, it is indeed a common fig. The tree has never tried to attain bush form, but rather keeps to a perfect Menora shape. It does not produce a breba crop, but the main is pretty early, delivering its bounty to us by mid-August in Cali. It does not split in high humidity, nor does it drip honey. There is no skin cracking or color change at all when ripe, as apposed to most other fig varieties... but rather it maintains its smooth, bright green appearance, so the ripe figs are camouflaged to the birds. The fruit has a strong berry flavor and a great acid balance. We did a taste-test here with this cultivar, placing it up against Zidi, UCD Ischia Black, Panache, Socorro Black and CdD-Blanc... we were split in our choice of the number two spot being Ischia Black or Socorro Black, but all chose Thermalito as the tastiest. ( I know that there are surely better figs out there... it very well might have been beat out by Emalyn's Purple for instance, if it had been present, as a majority of west-coaster's tend to select it as their top choice, but it is certainly no slouch, taste wise ) And you've seen above how very prolific it can be.

The founding source of the hundreds of wild fig trees growing throughout our small community was Americo Ghianda, the grandson of one of our town’s founders, who arrived here back in 1856 and established a 47 acre “Italian Gardens” truck farm. In 1916 Americo purchased an additional 17 acres, planting figs, olives, and grapes… and established the first winery in our county. His Adriatic fig orchard here was established with stock brought during the family’s immigration from Europe, and provided a bounty of ready receptors for the wasp’s northern march from its beach-head in Fresno in 1898. Birds and other critters then provided the distribution services of the viable fig seeds from Americo’s orchard.
