Description

Based upon genetic testing performed in 2010, Italian 258 (DFIC 265) and Italian 320 (DFIC 238) were determined to be synonyms. See Genetic structure and differentiation in cultivated fig (Ficus carica L.) and a condensed spreadsheet compiled by Richard Frost.

  • Main Crop GDD: 2,900
  • Main Crop Ripening Days: 100

It is very similar to Bourjassote Grise, only sweeter. It is medium to large sized with a solid dark strawberry pulp and purple-blueish colored skin. It produces a drop of resin blocking the ostiole which keeps insects out.

Per Patrick Shafer, this is the his best (along with #358) [did he mean #320 or was there a mix up?] of IT collection for his growing conditions. It is his earliest and latest fig each year.

Tends to ripen well in cooler weather, when other varieties will not.
