Description

Kiril Donov: This variety appeared from a seedling, a product of occasional hybridization between the fig varieties in our experimental field. One of the parents is most probably a Michurinska-10 fig, but this variety has a slightly lower cold hardiness, compared to Michurinska-10. The name Black Donov was given by our customers as a temporary working name and we started to use it.
The fruits of this variety have the best market characteristics of all varieties that we have in our experimental field.
The fruits are medium large. The eye is closed. The skin has attractive dark purple to black color. The meat is tasty and juicy, with well balanced sweetness and acidity.
Already repeatedly mentioned here this variety. Actually it is not officially registered variety. In our experimental field near Asenovgrad, I select it before 14-15 years from seedlings that were grown free of fallen fruit. At that time, the collection had over ten variety, so it can not be known parent varieties.
Later Plamen (Plamen forum) called this fig tree Black Donov , I liked the name and also named her.
From the beginning I want to emphasize that the fruits of this variety are the most perfect market characteristics of all the varieties we have in the experimental field. The fruits are medium large. The eye is closed. The skin is appetizing dark purple to black. The meat is tasty and juicy with well balanced sweetness and acidity. Most sweet fruits when they are well softened and slightly overripe.
My oldest tree of this variety is freezing to the ground only once, in December 2001, when it was still small. In the winter of 2005/06 he froze the entire crown, but keep the stem. In February 2012 they froze one and biennial shoots. In summer 2012 there was fruit, but this year the wood is stacked. Cold lasts less compared to Michurinsk-10.
The first harvest in most years is not very abundant. I feel that pollination helps fruiting, but I can look into the issue better only by next summer, when it will start paying off many male figs planted this year.
Tree habit is something between Brunswick and Michurinsk-10. No wonder they are my oldest trees and is likely to be among the parents. The leaves are exactly the same as Michurinsk 10.
And last but not least, this variety ripens only one week after Michurinsk 10. In the first week of August, I do not know whether there are other varieties ripe in Bulgaria, but Black Donov and Michurinsk -10 already in active fruiting. Today I saw one near fruit ripening on a small tree Brunswick, but it seems too early for them.
